The essay below (In English and Polish) is an expansion and a commentary to the parallel article (in Polish) by Andrew Kobos entitled "An Endagered World", also published in this issue of Zwoje ("The Scrolls"). Together, the two texts constitute a dialogue on the subject that will perhaps decide the world's near future. (AMK)

A WORLD IN DANGER ?

Perechodnik was right although it is doubtful that human society will in the future avoid calamities that it could prevent. This is perhaps for students of the human psyche to ponder and interpret. Not every human "flight from reason" can be avoided - still the record of civilizations teaches us that while insanity may succeed in the short run, it does not prevail in the long term. The events of September 11, 2001 have been subject to much scrutiny but it is worth noting that those who plan a calamity do not succeed at the end for the simple reason that they do not take failure into account.. The Japanese who attacked at Pearl Harbor did not consider the strength of the "sleeping giant." Terrorists such as Osama Bin Laden had already decided to give up their own lives thus acknowledging a priori their failure. Al-Qaida could succeed in the short term when it assumed the character of a corporation and used the technology of the West. However, it could reward its followers only with death or imprisonment and it is thus inferior to a criminal enterprise that while it can also mask its character with legitimate activities (and if it makes war it is generally against its own) it can at least promise wealth on earth to its members and entrance into universities rather than paradise, for its young.

In the aftermath of the horrible events that befell America we need not only examine our weaknesses but also take pride in our strength. Much is being written about clash of civilizations and particularly about impending conflict between Islam and the West. For example, Patrick Buchanan has just published a book The Death of the West, that promises to be a best-seller. He forecasts demographic projections that spell the end of Western Civilization and the invasion of Europe and Asia by Islamic and African forces that will destroy our way of life. It is not the first time that forecasts have been made about the "Decline of the West". It is fundamentally poor history. Civilizations do not die. The Roman Empire did not "fall". It became something else.

Islam is trapped in the twenty-first century with a faith that seems to be in the realm of flying carpets, when what threatens it is carpet bombing. It is a faith that has not found its Luther and Calvin. Those who have remained steadfast to the teachings and imagery (verbal rather than pictorial) are not nations but families with flags and thus have not yet achieved that status which the smallest states in Europe have enjoyed for centuries. When a medieval merchant in Italy started his ledger with the sentence: "In the name of God and profit," he at least understood the role of religion in the new world of finance. The Islamic world may understand business methods but it has not yet understood the role that religion should have in their lives - indeed, they have not even grasped something as fundamental as the kind of clothing that makes progress possible. When Kemal Ataturk decreed that his people should stop wearing the fez and that women need not remain veiled he understood that simple fact.

That Islamism appeals to many who are downtrodden should not surprise us and is not to its credit. Communism also appealed to many of the dispossessed worldwide and it is not its credit that these ideas were propagated by intellectuals far more sophisticated than the mullahs. But in the end once the hypnotic effects of its verbal inventions wore off it collapsed under the weight of its own foolishness, though unfortunately not before it brought death and misery to millions worldwide. The bankruptcy of the Islamic movements (as was the case with both Communism and Fascism) is best seen in their fanatical devotion to anti-Semitism, which for them seems to be the way to find allies.

Bin Laden and his followers assumed that they could bring the West to its knees with an attack on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and, one assumes, an attempt to destroy the White House. But it is an old truth that if you intend to kill the king you had better succeed because otherwise the king’s revenge will be most terrible.

Americans are a resourceful people, quite capable of taking care of themselves and will wreak terrible vengeance on those who are trying to stop them from enjoying life. Terrorism, the weapon of the weak, should alert us, not frighten us. We have to say this loud and clear to friends and foes alike: if one wishes to kill and maim innocents in the pursuit of a religious goal, he should be speedily helped to achieve martyrdom.

The fundamental inappropriateness of Islamic beliefs will eventually lead to cataclysmic changes in Moslem society. The younger generation, the jeunesse dorée from Mecca to Teheran, is waiting for an opportunity to depose their elders. The fact that some of them have chosen to give up their lives for reasons as varied as those that guided the Crusaders (whom they vilify) should not be taken as symptomatic of the generation as a whole. The Crusaders embarked on conquest for reasons that ranged from religious to being released from payment of debts, many were undoubtedly unhappy at home and wished to travel. Among the terrorists there must be many who find it difficult to contemplate a "nine to five" type of existence. The terrorist movement will eventually disintegrate like that of the Crusades.

It is incredible that in the entire world of Islam there is no thundering voice that may describe Jihad as an abomination, an intentional and cowardly attack on the innocent that no religion should sanction. It is telling that there has not been an important Islamic sage or leader who has stood against this self-defeating ideology. An Islam that seems to have a great appeal among those who are in prison tells us a great deal about its future. As a faith it offers a refuge for a mind in turmoil, but unlike other faiths that have preached love of the other, it turns the mind towards hatred of the other. It may change a belief, but the chemistry remains the same - toxic and volatile.

This world of Islam bears only superficial resemblance to that civilization which held an honored place in the preservation and dispersion of knowledge when medieval society was still centered on the Mediterranean basin. But the absence of Islamic activity in the process of the formation of nation states ended such a chapter. After the naval Battle of Lepanto in 1571 there was no longer any prospect of competition with the West. The world moved West, away from the Mediterranean and over the Atlantic. It led to a new chapter in world history in which Islam was only a bystander.

The fact that there are frequent voices in the world of Islam that call for its unification in the face of the unremitting rivalry and warring among its many parts shows how far that world is from confronting its problems. In the end, like the person who chooses the right door because all the other doors have been closed off, the Islamic world must choose the path similar to that, which has guided the growth and democratic character of Israel. At that point, they will be like Israel and no longer likely to fight it.

Of course, we are in danger individually and in groups - that is nothing new - but as a civilization, the West with America as its model is just beginning to make its mark on the world. After all, the Roman civilization lasted for more than a millennium. It did not even know enough about human reproduction so it could not associate drinking from lead goblets with infertility. America, contrary to Buchannan, does not depend solely on reproduction. Its ideas are doing the propagating. It has a great future for itself and for the entire world.

Perechodnik miał rację, chociaż jest wątpliwe czy społeczeństwo ludzkie uniknie w przyszłości klęsk, którym mogłoby zapobiec. Jest być może zadaniem badaczy ludzkiej psychiki zastanowić się nad tym i to wyjaśnić. Nie każda ludzka "zatrata rozsądku" jest do uniknięcia – a jednak dzieje cywilizacji uczą nas, że podczas gdy szaleństwo może na krótko powieść się, nie przetrwa ono długo.

Wydarzenia 11 września 2001 są przedmiotem wielu studiów, ale warto podkreślić, że ci, którzy planują nieszczęście nie odnoszą końcowego sukcesu z tego prostego powodu, że nie biorą pod uwagę porażki. Japończycy, którzy zaatakowali Pearl Harbour, nie rozważyli siły "śpiącego giganta". Terroryści, tacy jak Osama bin Laden, najpierw zdecydowali się oddać swoje życie i przez to a priori uznali swoją porażkę. Al-Quaida mogła na krótko odnieść sukces, gdy działała jak korporacja i wykorzystała technologię Zachodu. W następstwie straszliwych wypadków, które spadły na Amerykę, musimy nie tylko przebadać nasze słabości, ale także poczuć się dumni z naszej siły. Wiele pisze się o starciu cywilizacji, a w szczególności o nadchodzącym konflikcie pomiędzy Islamem i Zachodem. Na przykład, Patrick Buchanan ostatnio opublikował książkę pt. The Death of the West ("Śmierć Zachodu"), która zapowiada się na bestseller. Przewiduje on projekcje demograficzne, które zapowiadają koniec zachodniej cywilizacji i inwazję Europy i Azji przez siły islamskie i afrykańskie, które zniszczą nasz sposób życia. Nie jest to pierwszy raz, że pojawiają się przewidywania o "śmierci Zachodu". Imperium Rzymskie, nie "upadło". Stało się ono czymś innym.

Islam znalazł się w pułapce dwudziestego pierwszego wieku jako wiara, która zdaje się pozostawać w świecie latających dywanów, podczas gdy to co mu grozi to dywanowe bombardowanie. Jest to wiara, która nie odnalazła swojego Lutra i Kalvina. Ci którzy niezachwianie pozostali przy jej naukach i obrazowości (bardziej słownej niż wizualnej), nie są narodami, lecz rodami z flagami i tą drogą nie osiągnęli jeszcze takiego statusu, jakim od wieków cieszą się najmniejsze nawet państwa w Europie. Kiedy średniowieczny kupiec we Włoszech rozpoczynał swój rejestr zdaniem "W imię Boga i zysku", przynajmniej rozumiał on rolę religii w nowym świecie finansów. Świat Islamu może rozumieć metody interesu, ale jeszcze nie zrozumiał roli, jaką religia winna odgrywać w jego życiu - doprawdy, nie pojął nawet czegoś tak fundamentalnego, jak to, jaki rodzaj ubioru umożliwia postęp. Kiedy Kemal Ataturk wydał dekret, że jego ludzie winni zaprzestać noszenia fezu oraz że kobiety nie muszą już pozostawać zawoalowane, rozumiał ten prosty fakt.

Islamizm pociąga wielu, którzy są podeptani. Nie powinno nas to dziwić i nie przemawia to na jego korzyść. Komunizm także pociągał na całym świecie wielu skrzywdzonych i nie liczy się na jego korzyść to, iż jego idee były propagowane przez intelektualistów o wiele bardziej wyrafinowanych niż mułłowie. Ale w końcu, gdy hipnotyczny efekt jego werbalnych wynalazków zaniknął, komunizm zapadł się pod ciężarem swojej własnej głupoty, choć, niestety, nie zanim przyniósł był śmierć i nędzę milionom na świecie. Bankructwo ruchów islamistycznych (podobnie jak miało to miejsce z komunizmem i faszyzmem) jest najlepiej widoczne w ich fanatycznym przywiązaniu do antysemityzmu, który dla nich wydaje się być sposobem na pozyskanie sojuszników.

Bin Laden i jego zwolennicy założyli, że potrafią rzucić Zachód na kolana przez atak na World Trade Center, Pentagon i, jak się sądzi, Biały Dom. Ale jest starą prawdą, że jeżeli zamierzasz zabić króla, to lepiej żeby ci się udało, gdyż inaczej zemsta króla będzie najstraszniejsza.

Amerykanie są zaradnym narodem, całkiem zdolnym do zadbania o siebie, i wywrą straszną zemstę na tych, którzy próbują powstrzymać ich od cieszenia się życiem. Terroryzm, broń słabych, powinien nas zaalarmować, ale nie przerażać. Musimy powiedzieć głośno i jasno zarówno przyjaciołom jak i wrogom: jeśli ktoś pragnie zabijać i kaleczyć niewinnych w pogoni za jakimś religijnym celem, powinno mu się pospiesznie dopomóc osiągnąć męczeństwo.

Fundamentalne niestosowności islamskich wierzeń doprowadzą w końcu do kataklizmowych zmian w muzułmańskim społeczeństwie. Młodsze pokolenie, jeunesse dorée od Mekki do Teheranu, czeka na sposobność obalenia swojej starszyzny. Fakt, że niektórzy z tego pokolenia, zdecydowali się poświęcić swoje życie z powodów tak rozmaitych jak owe, które kiedyś wiodły krzyżowców (których teraz oczerniają), nie powinien być przyjmowany za symptomatyczny dla pokolenia jako całości. Krzyżowcy podjęli podbój z powodów sięgających od religijnych do uzyskiwania zwolnienia od płacenia długów; wielu, bez wątpienia było niezadowolonych w domu i pragnęło podróżować. Pośród terrorystów musi być wielu takich, którym trudno pogodzić się z egzystencją typu "od dziewiątej do piątej". Ruch terrorystyczny w końcu rozpadnie się, podobnie jak rozpadł się ruch krucjat.

Jest wręcz niewiarygodne, że w całym świecie Islamu nie ma żadnego grzmiącego głosu, który określiłby Jihad jako obrzydliwość, jako celowy i tchórzowski atak na niewinnych, którego żadna religia nie powinna sankcjonować. Wiele mówiący jest fakt, że nie ma żadnego ważnego islamskiego mędrca ani przywódcy, który wystąpiłby przeciwko tej samoniszczącej ideologii. Islamizm, który wydaje się być wielce pociągający wśród ludzi w więzieniach, mówi nam wiele o swojej przyszłości. Jako wiara, oferuje on ucieczkę dla zawirowanych umysłów, ale, w przeciwieństwie do innych wiar, które uczą miłości do innych, zwraca on umysł w stronę nienawiści do innych. Może on zmieniać jakieś swoje wierzenie, ale chemia pozostaje ta sama - trująca i zapalna.

Świat Islamu nosi tylko powierzchowne podobieństwo do owej cywilizacji, która piastowała honorowe miejsce w zachowaniu i rozpowszechnianiu wiedzy, gdy średniowieczne społeczeństwo miało jeszcze swoje centrum w basenie śródziemnomorskim. Ale brak udziału Islamu w procesie formowania narodowych państw zakończył ten rozdział. Po morskiej Bitwie pod Lepanto w roku 1571, Islam nie miał już żadnego widoku na konkurencję z Zachodem. Świat przesunął się na zachód od Morza Śródziemnego i za Atlantyk. To doprowadziło do nowego rozdziału w historii świata, w którym Islam był już tylko widzem.

Fakt, że w świecie Islamu występują częste głosy nawołujące do jego zjednoczenia w obliczu nieustępującej rywalizacji i wojowania pomiędzy wielu jego częściami, wskazuje jak daleko znajduje się ten świat od skonfrontowania swych problemów. Koniec końców, jak ów człowiek, który znajduje właściwe drzwi, ponieważ wszystkie inne zostały zatrzaśnięte, świat islamski wybierze drogę podobną do tej, którą prowadzi do rozwoju i demokratycznego charakteru Izraela. W tym momencie, stanie się ten świat taki jak Izrael i prawdopodobnie nie będzie go nadal zwalczać.

Oczywiście, indywidualnie i grupowo, grozi nam niebezpieczeństwo - to nie jest nic nowego - ale jako cywilizacja, Zachód, z Ameryką, jako jej modelem, zaczyna wyróżniać się na świecie. W końcu, rzymska cywilizacja trwała przez ponad tysiąclecie. Nie wiedziała ona wystarczająco wiele o ludzkim rozmażaniu, nie mogła więc powiązać picia z ołowianych pucharów w niepłodnością. Ameryka, wbrew Buchananowi, nie zależy wyłącznie od reprodukcji. Jej idee czynią propagację. Ma wielką przyszłość dla siebie i dla całego świata.
