Together, the two texts constitute a dialogue on the subject that will perhaps decide the world's near future. (AMK)

A WORLD IN DANGER ?

Perechodnik was right although it is doubtful that human society will in the future avoid calamities that it could prevent. This is perhaps for students of the human psyche to ponder and interpret. Not every human "flight from reason" can be avoided - still the record of civilizations teaches us that while insanity may succeed in the short run, it does not prevail in the long term. The events of September 11, 2001 have been subject to much scrutiny but it is worth noting that those who plan a calamity do not succeed at the end for the simple reason that they do not take failure into account.. The Japanese who attacked at Pearl Harbor did not consider the strength of the "sleeping giant." Terrorists such as Osama Bin Laden had already decided to give up their own lives thus acknowledging a priori their failure. Al-Qaida could succeed in the short term when it assumed the character of a corporation and used the technology of the West. However, it could reward its followers only with death or imprisonment and it is thus inferior to a criminal enterprise that while it can also mask its character with legitimate activities (and if it makes war it is generally against its own) it can at least promise wealth on earth to its members and entrance into universities rather than paradise, for its young.

In the aftermath of the horrible events that befell America we need not only examine our weaknesses but also take pride in our strength. Much is being written about clash of civilizations and particularly about impending conflict between Islam and the West. For example, Patrick Buchanan has just published a book The Death of the West, that promises to be a best-seller. He forecasts demographic projections that spell the end of Western Civilization and the invasion of Europe and Asia by Islamic and African forces that will destroy our way of life. It is not the first time that forecasts have been made about the "Decline of the West". It is fundamentally poor history. Civilizations do not die. The Roman Empire did not "fall". It became something else.

Islam is trapped in the twenty-first century with a faith that seems to be in the realm of flying carpets, when what threatens it is carpet bombing. It is a faith that has not found its Luther and Calvin. Those who have remained steadfast to the teachings and imagery (verbal rather than pictorial) are not nations but families with flags and thus have not yet achieved that status which the smallest states in Europe have enjoyed for centuries. When a medieval merchant in Italy started his ledger with the sentence: "In the name of God and profit," he at least understood the role of religion in the new world of finance. The Islamic world may understand business methods but it has not yet understood the role that religion should have in their lives - indeed, they have not even grasped something as fundamental as the kind of clothing that makes progress possible. When Kemal Ataturk decreed that his people should stop wearing the fez and that women need not remain veiled he understood that simple fact.

That Islamism appeals to many who are downtrodden should not surprise us and is not to its credit. Communism also appealed to many of the dispossessed worldwide and it is not its credit that these ideas were propagated by intellectuals far more sophisticated than the mullahs. But in the end once the hypnotic effects of its verbal inventions wore off it collapsed under the weight of its own foolishness, though unfortunately not before it brought death and misery to millions worldwide. The bankruptcy of the Islamic movements (as was the case with both Communism and Fascism) is best seen in their fanatical devotion to anti-Semitism, which for them seems to be the way to find allies.

Bin Laden and his followers assumed that they could bring the West to its knees with an attack on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and, one assumes, an attempt to destroy the White House. But it is an old truth that if you intend to kill the king you had better succeed because otherwise the king’s revenge will be most terrible.

Americans are a resourceful people, quite capable of taking care of themselves and will wreak terrible vengeance on those who are trying to stop them from enjoying life. Terrorism, the weapon of the weak, should alert us, not frighten us. We have to say this loud and clear to friends and foes alike: if one wishes to kill and maim innocents in the pursuit of a religious goal, he should be speedily helped to achieve martyrdom.

The fundamental inappropriateness of Islamic beliefs will eventually lead to cataclysmic changes in Moslem society. The younger generation, the jeunesse dorée from Mecca to Teheran, is waiting for an opportunity to depose their elders. The fact that some of them have chosen to give up their lives for reasons as varied as those that guided the Crusaders (whom they vilify) should not be taken as symptomatic of the generation as a whole. The Crusaders embarked on conquest for reasons that ranged from religious to being released from payment of debts, many were undoubtedly unhappy at home and wished to travel. Among the terrorists there must be many who find it difficult to contemplate a "nine to five" type of existence. The terrorist movement will eventually disintegrate like that of the Crusades.

It is incredible that in the entire world of Islam there is no thundering voice that may describe Jihad as an abomination, an intentional and cowardly attack on the innocent that no religion should sanction. It is telling that there has not been an important Islamic sage or leader who has stood against this self-defeating ideology. An Islam that seems to have a great appeal among those who are in prison tells us a great deal about its future. As a faith it offers a refuge for a mind in turmoil, but unlike other faiths that have preached love of the other, it turns the mind towards hatred of the other. It may change a belief, but the chemistry remains the same - toxic and volatile.

This world of Islam bears only superficial resemblance to that civilization which held an honored place in the preservation and dispersion of knowledge when medieval society was still centered on the Mediterranean basin. But the absence of Islamic activity in the process of the formation of nation states ended such a chapter. After the naval Battle of Lepanto in 1571 there was no longer any prospect of competition with the West. The world moved West, away from the Mediterranean and over the Atlantic. It led to a new chapter in world history in which Islam was only a bystander.

The fact that there are frequent voices in the world of Islam that call for its unification in the face of the unremitting rivalry and warring among its many parts shows how far that world is from confronting its problems. In the end, like the person who chooses the right door because all the other doors have been closed off, the Islamic world must choose the path similar to that, which has guided the growth and democratic character of Israel. At that point, they will be like Israel and no longer likely to fight it.

Of course, we are in danger individually and in groups - that is nothing new - but as a civilization, the West with America as its model is just beginning to make its mark on the world. After all, the Roman civilization lasted for more than a millennium. It did not even know enough about human reproduction so it could not associate drinking from lead goblets with infertility. America, contrary to Buchannan, does not depend solely on reproduction. Its ideas are doing the propagating. It has a great future for itself and for the entire world.

Perechodnik mial racje, chociaz jest watpliwe czy spoleczenstwo ludzkie uniknie w przyszlosci klesk, ktorym mogloby zapobiec. Jest byc moze zadaniem badaczy ludzkiej psychiki zastanowic sie nad tym i to wyjasnic. Nie kazda ludzka "zatrata rozsadku" jest do unikniecia – a jednak dzieje cywilizacji ucza nas, ze podczas gdy szalenstwo moze na krotko powiesc sie, nie przetrwa ono dlugo.

Wydarzenia 11 wrzesnia 2001 sa przedmiotem wielu studiow, ale warto podkreslic, ze ci, ktorzy planuja nieszczescie nie odnosza koncowego sukcesu z tego prostego powodu, ze nie biora pod uwage porazki. Japonczycy, ktorzy zaatakowali Pearl Harbour, nie rozwazyli sily "spiacego giganta". Terrorysci, tacy jak Osama bin Laden, najpierw zdecydowali sie oddac swoje zycie i przez to a priori uznali swoja porazke. Al-Quaida mogla na krotko odniesc sukces, gdy dzialala jak korporacja i wykorzystala technologie Zachodu. Swoich zwolennikow mogla jednakze nagrodzic tylko smiercia albo wiezieniem i dlatego jest posledniejsza od zorganizowanej przestepczosci, ktora, podczas gdy takze ukrywa swoj charakter za legalna dzialalnoscia (i jesli prowadzi wojne, to na ogol przeciwko swoim), to przynajmniej moze obiecywac swoim czlonkom bogactwo na ziemi a swoim mlodym raczej zapisy na uniwersytety niz raj.

W nastepstwie straszliwych wypadkow, ktore spadly na Ameryke, musimy nie tylko przebadac nasze slabosci, ale takze poczuc sie dumni z naszej sily. Wiele pisze sie o starciu cywilizacji, a w szczegolnosci o nadchodzacym konflikcie pomiedzy Islamem i Zachodem. Na przyklad, Patrick Buchanan ostatnio opublikowal ksiazke pt. The Death of the West ("Smierc Zachodu"), ktora zapowiada sie na bestseller. Przewiduje on projekcje demograficzne, ktore zapowiadaja koniec zachodniej cywilizacji i inwazje Europy i Azji przez sily islamskie i afrykanskie, ktore zniszcza nasz sposob zycia. Nie jest to pierwszy raz, ze pojawiaja sie przewidywania o "smierci Zachodu". Imperium Rzymskie, nie "upadlo". Stalo sie ono czyms innym.

Islam znalazl sie w pulapce dwudziestego pierwszego wieku jako wiara, ktora zdaje sie pozostawac w swiecie latajacych dywanow, podczas gdy to co mu grozi to dywanowe bombardowanie. Jest to wiara, ktora nie odnalazla swojego Luthra i Calvina. Ci ktorzy niezachwianie pozostali przy jej naukach i obrazowosci (bardziej slownej niz wizualnej), nie sa narodami, lecz rodami z flagami i ta droga nie osiagneli jeszcze takiego statusu, jakim od wiekow ciesza sie najmniejsze nawet panstwa w Europie. Kiedy sredniowieczny kupiec we Wloszech rozpoczynal swoj rejestr zdaniem "W imie Boga i zysku", przynajmniej rozumial on role religii w nowym swiecie finansow. Swiat Islamu moze rozumiec metody interesu, ale jeszcze nie zrozumial roli, jaka religia winna odgrywac w jego zyciu - doprawdy, nie pojal nawet czegos tak fundamentalnego, jak to, jaki rodzaj ubioru umozliwia postep. Kiedy Kemal Ataturk wydal dekret, ze jego ludzie winni zaprzestac noszenia fezu oraz ze kobiety nie musza juz pozostawac zawoalowane, rozumial ten prosty fakt.

Islamizm pociaga wielu, ktorzy sa podeptani. Nie powinno nas to dziwic i nie przemawia to na jego korzysc. Komunizm takze pociagal na calym swiecie wielu skrzywdzonych i nie liczy sie na jego korzysc to, iz jego idee byly propagowane przez intelektualistow o wiele bardziej wyrafinowanych niz mullowie. Ale w koncu, gdy hipnotyczny efekt jego werbalnych wynalazkow zaniknal, komunizm zapadl sie pod ciezarem swojej wlasnej glupoty, choc, niestety, nie zanim przyniosl byl smierc i nedze milionom na swiecie. Bankructwo ruchow islamistycznych (podobnie jak mialo to miejsce z komunizmem i faszyzmem) jest najlepiej widoczne w ich fanatycznym przywiazaniu do antysemityzmu, ktory dla nich wydaje sie byc sposobem na pozyskanie sojusznikow.

Bin Laden i jego zwolennicy zalozyli, ze potrafia rzucic Zachod na kolana przez atak na World Trade Center, Pentagon i, jak sie sadzi, Bialy Dom. Ale jest stara prawda, ze jezeli zamierzasz zabic krola, to lepiej zeby ci sie udalo, gdyz inaczej zemsta krola bedzie najstraszniejsza.

Amerykanie sa zaradnym narodem, calkiem zdolnym do zadbania o siebie, i wywra straszna zemste na tych, ktorzy probuja powstrzymac ich od cieszenia sie zyciem. Terroryzm, bron slabych, powinien nas zaalarmowac, ale nie przerazac. Musimy powiedziec glosno i jasno zarowno przyjaciolom jak i wrogom: jesli ktos pragnie zabijac i kaleczyc niewinnych w pogoni za jakims religijnym celem, powinno mu sie pospiesznie dopomoc osiagnac meczenstwo.

Fundamentalne niestosownosci islamskich wierzen doprowadza w koncu do kataklizmowych zmian w muzulmanskim spoleczenstwie. Mlodsze pokolenie, jeunesse dorée od Mekki do Teheranu, czeka na sposobnosc obalenia swojej starszyzny. Fakt, ze niektorzy z tego pokolenia, zdecydowali sie poswiecic swoje zycie z powodow tak rozmaitych jak owe, ktore kiedys wiodly krzyzowcow (ktorych teraz oczerniaja), nie powinien byc przyjmowany za symptomatyczny dla pokolenia jako calosci. Krzyzowcy podjeli podboj z powodow siegajacych od religijnych do uzyskiwania zwolnienia od placenia dlugow; wielu, bez watpienia bylo niezadowolonych w domu i pragnelo podrozowac. Posrod terrorystow musi byc wielu takich, ktorym trudno pogodzic sie z egzystencja typu "od dziewiatej do piatej". Ruch terrorystyczny w koncu rozpadnie sie, podobnie jak rozpadl sie ruch krucjat.

Jest wrecz niewiarygodne, ze w calym swiecie Islamu nie ma zadnego grzmiacego glosu, ktory okreslilby Jihad jako obrzydliwosc, jako celowy i tchorzowski atak na niewinnych, ktorego zadna religia nie powinna sankcjonowac. Wiele mowiacy jest fakt, ze nie ma zadnego waznego islamskiego medrca ani przywodcy, ktory wystapilby przeciwko tej samoniszczacej idelogii. Islamizm, ktory wydaje sie byc wielce pociagajacy wsrod ludzi w wiezieniach, mowi nam wiele o swojej przyszlosci. Jako wiara, oferuje on ucieczke dla zawirowanych umyslow, ale, w przeciwienstwie do innych wiar, ktore ucza milosci do innych, zwraca on umysl w strone nienawisci do innych. Moze on zmieniac jakies swoje wierzenie, ale chemia pozostaje ta sama - trujaca i zapalna.

Swiat Islamu nosi tylko powierzchowne podobienstwo do owej cywilizacji, ktora piastowala honorowe miejsce w zachowaniu i rozpowszechnianiu wiedzy, gdy sredniowieczne spoleczenstwo mialo jeszcze swoje centrum w basenie srodziemnomorskim. Ale brak udzialu Islamu w procesie formowania narodowych panstw zakonczyl ten rozdzial. Po morskiej Bitwie pod Lepanto w roku 1571, Islam nie mial juz zadnego widoku na konkurencje z Zachodem. Swiat przesunal sie na zachod od Morza Srodziemnego i za Atlantyk. To doprowadzilo do nowego rozdzialu w historii swiata, w ktorym Islam byl juz tylko widzem.

Fakt, ze w swiecie Islamu wystepuja czeste glosy nawolujace do jego zjednoczenia w obliczu nieustepujacej rywalizacji i wojowania pomiedzy wielu jego czesciami, wskazuje jak daleko znajduje sie ten swiat od skonfrontowania swych problemow. Koniec koncow, jak ow czlowiek, ktory znajduje wlasciwe drzwi, poniewaz wszystkie inne zostaly zatrzasniete, swiat islamski wybierze droge podobna do tej, ktora prowadzi do rozwoju i demokratycznego charakteru Izraela. W tym momencie, stanie sie ten swiat taki jak Izrael i prawdopodobnie nie bedzie go nadal zwalczac.

Oczywiscie, indywidualnie i grupowo, grozi nam niebezpieczenstwo - to nie jest nic nowego - ale jako cywilizacja, Zachod, z Ameryka, jako jej modelem, zaczyna wyrozniac sie na swiecie. W koncu, rzymska cywilizacja trwala przez ponad tysiaclecie. Nie wiedziala ona wystarczajaco wiele o ludzkim rozmazaniu, nie mogla wiec powiazac picia z olowianych pucharow w nieplodnoscia. Ameryka, wbrew Buchanannowi, nie zalezy wylacznie od reprodukcji. Jej idee czynia propagacje. Ma wielka przyszlosc dla siebie i dla calego swiata.
